What Is a Croque Monsieur Sandwich?
A Croque Monsieur is an elevated grilled sandwich made from ham and cheese. It is dipped in an egg wash before being fried in butter.
It is similar to a Monte Cristo, except that the Monte Cristo also has turkey added to it.
Croque Monsieur Sandwiches Ingredients
These easy to make sandwiches come together with 10 simple ingredients.
- Ham. Leftover ham from dinner or deli ham, either one will work but it should be thick sliced.
- Swiss Cheese. When it comes to ham sandwiches, Swiss is one of the top cheeses that goes with ham.
- Mayonnaise. Mixed with mustard, mayonnaise creates the perfect sauce for these sandwiches.
- Mustard. Dijon or yellow mustard can be used.
- Eggs. The sandwiches are dipped in egg wash before frying to get them golden.
- Salt and pepper.
- Hot Sauce. Optional but we like the added flavour it gives to the egg wash. We use Frank’s.
- Bread. White bread works best. We like to use an artisan bread that is sliced thicker than a normal loaf of bread.
- Butter. This is what the sandwiches will be cooked in. Don’t skip the butter because it is what adds richness and makes these sandwiches elevated.
What To Serve With Croque Monsieur Sandwiches
These sandwiches pair well with a sweet jam for dipping. The sweetness cuts the saltiness of the ham and Swiss cheese. Blackberry jam or preserves is our favourite.
On the side, we like to serve these sandwiches with a fresh garden salad, crispy French fries, potato chips, or raw veggies like carrots and celery.
How To Make These Sandwiches
Croque Monsieur sandwiches are easily made on an outdoor griddle which is our favourite way to cook this recipe.
The sandwiches can also be done in a frying pan on the stove. A cast iron frying pan is our go-to to create the crispy, golden exterior.
