Why Make Your Own Salad Dressing?

The answer to this is simple: because homemade dressing tastes so much better. And homemade dressing contains no preservatives or ingredients you may not want or need.

After reading the labels on salad dressing, we started making our own. The ingredients that turned us off of bottled dressing were soybean oil, monosodium glutamate and sometimes even food dyes.

Greek Dressing Ingredients

This recipe is made from ingredients that are probably already in your cupboards.

  • Extra Virgin Olive Oil. A good quality olive oil is best for making salad dressings. Look for olive oil in metal containers or darker coloured bottles. Light can affect the oil, so its best stored in a dark, cool area in your cupboard.
  • Red Wine Vinegar. This add an acidic element to the dressing to balance out the oil.
  • Garlic. Minced garlic is used and adds a lot of flavour to this dressing.
  • Oregano. Dried oregano is used in many Greek dishes.
  • Dijon Mustard. Adding Dijon mustard gives the dressing a little extra tang.
  • Sea Salt. We like to use fine sea salt because it dissolves better.
  • Coarse Black Pepper.

How To Use Homemade Greek Salad Dressing

Beyond using this dressing on a salad, there are other ways to use Greek Dressing.

One way to use this dressing is as a marinade. Greek dressing has all the perfect ingredients to make a great marinade for pork or chicken. Use this dressing to marinade pork skewers before barbecuing.

Toss Greek salad dressing with cooked pasta for a quick and easy pasta salad. Add chopped spinach, diced sweet peppers, and crumbled feta to the salad for colour and add some chopped chicken to make it a meal.

Storing Greek Salad Dressing

Greek Salad dressing is best when consumed right away. But this dressing can be stored in the fridge and used within a couple of days.

Store it in an air-tight container in the fridge until ready to use.
