Ingredients For This Dip

There really are only two ingredients in the dip and they are readily available just about everywhere.

  • Sour Cream
  • Onion Soup Mix

The Original Recipe

The original recipe for this dip dates back to 1954 according to a Google search. It was originally called California Dip and promoted by Lipton.

Making This Dip: No Bowl Required

One thing we love about this dip is how easy it is to make. And all you need are the two ingredients and a spoon!

We don’t always use a bowl to make this dip because it uses the whole container of sour cream, so we just make it in the container.

Take Two Ingredient Chip Dip Up a Notch

Although the dip tastes great on its own and it’s a classic, sometimes we like to jazz it up a bit by adding an extra ingredient.

  • Hot Sauce. A few shakes of hot sauce like Frank’s Red Hot or Tabasco sauce gives the dip a little kick.
  • Mrs. Dash Seasoning. A tablespoon or two of Mrs. Dash seasoning adds a touch of flavour. Our favourite is Mrs. Dash Southwest Chipotle. This is especially good when serving the dip with a vegetable platter.
  • Ranch seasoning. Add 3-4 Tablespoons of Ranch seasoning to create a Ranch Onion Dip.

Serving Two Ingredient Chip Dip

This is a dip that should be served cold and kept cold when serving.

Serve it with plain potato chips or cut-up vegetables.

How Long Does This Dip Last?

Usually, we don’t have any leftover dip after a party. If there is leftover dip, and the dip has been sitting out, we discard any leftover dip to avoid any chance of cross-contamination or foodborne illness.

This dip can be made ahead of time and kept in the fridge for up to 3 days, sometimes longer, depending on the freshness of the sour cream.

We recommend making this dip the night before or at least an hour before serving for the best flavour. Stir the dip before serving if you make it ahead.
