Ingredients for Spinach Dip

This recipe has only six ingredients and is very easy to make.

  • Frozen Spinach. Thawed and drained, frozen spinach works best in this dip.
  • Sour Cream. The addition of sour cream in this dip adds a tanginess that complements the spinach.
  • Mayonnaise. This adds creaminess and balances the tang of the sour cream.
  • Cream of Leek Soup Mix. This soup mix adds a mild but sweet onion flavour to the dip.
  • Green Onions. Sliced very fine, the onion adds to the leek flavour in the dip.
  • Black Pepper. Freshly cracked black pepper is what we use.

Equipment Used To Make Spinach Dip

When making this recipe, a food processor makes it so much easier to put this dip together.

The dip can also be made without a food processor. A large bowl and a spatula can be used instead.

I have also made this dip using a stand mixer. When using the mixer, it’s easier to mix if the spinach is chopped smaller.

Tips For Making Spinach Dip

Frozen spinach is used in this recipe. For the best results, the spinach should be completely thawed and drained of access liquid.

To drain the spinach of liquid, place the spinach in a mesh strainer over a bowl to thaw. Once thawed, press down on the spinach with the back of a spoon to expel any extra liquid.

Making this dip the day before or at least a couple of hours before serving gives the flavours a chance to blend together for a more flavourful dip.

The dip should be kept cold. If serving outdoors, place the bowl of spinach dip in a shaded area. Serve smaller bowls and refill or swap as needed. Keeping the bowl on a bed of ice is also a good way to keep this dip cold. Discard any dip that has been outside or in the heat for more than 90 minutes.

How To Serve Spinach Dip

This dip is best served cold. It can be used as a dip or a spread.

  • Traditionally spinach dip has been served in a hollowed-out pumpernickel loaf with cubed pieces of the bread for dipping.
  • Sour Dough Bread can also be used as the ‘bowl’ for this dip.
  • Butter crackers are a good choice for dipping.
  • This dip is also good for a vegetable platter.
  • Slices pita bread is perfect in this dip as well. Slice the pita into triangles and fry them until crispy for even more flavour.
  • Chip dip. Regular chips are perfect to serve with this dip.
  • Spread this dip on a burger bun for lamb or turkey burgers.

Storing Leftover Spinach Dip

Any leftover dip can be stored covered in the fridge for up to two days.

If the dip has been out of the fridge for more than 90 minutes, it may need to be discarded. Bacteria may form in the dip when not refrigerated for long periods on time.

Freezing this dip is not recommended. The mayonnaise in the dip can separate when frozen and cause the dip to be watery. The taste will not be the same either.
