Ingredients For BBQ Bourbon Peach Tarts

The ingredients for these tarts are simple and easy to find.

  • Peaches. Fresh peaches are used.
  • Brown Sugar. This gives the tart filling a caramel flavour and it complements the bourbon. There is a second addition of brown sugar after baking that adds a bit of texture to the top of the tarts.
  • Bourbon. Your favourite bourbon will work in this recipe. Our favourite is Old Forester, but we have also used other brands.
  • Cornstarch. This helps to thicken the filling.
  • Lemon Juice. A little lemon juice added to the filling preserves the colour of the peaches.
  • Vanilla Extract.
  • Cinnamon. This spice complements the flavours of the bourbon and the peaches.
  • Nutmeg. Another spice to complement flavours. We use whole nutmeg and grate it ourselves.
  • Tart Shells. These can be homemade or store-bought. We use the kind you can find in the frozen food section of the grocery store.

Four fresh peaches and whole nutmeg on a cutting board, with a knife beside them. There is a bottle of Bourbon, a bowl of brown sugar, a bottle of vanilla extract, a container of cinnamon and tart shells in the background.

Does Bourbon Have To Be Added?

Adding Bourbon to peaches enhances their flavour. But if you don’t want to use Bourbon, it can be replaced with water.

The bourbon can also be replaced with other types of alcohol. Brandy, Cognac, Peach Schnapps, or any orange-flavoured liqueur will also work in this recipe.

How To Bake Tarts On The BBQ

Baking on the BBQ is easy. Just about anything can be baked in the BBQ.

To bake these tarts, the BBQ will need to be heated using indirect heat. To do this, heat only one side of the BBQ. Our gas grill has 5 burners, we use the two burners closest to the tank when baking.

For charcoal grills, the charcoal should be placed on one side of the BBQ. Then the tarts are placed on the other side away from the coals.

Preheat the BBQ just as you would an oven. Then bake on the side of the BBQ that is not turned on. The tarts will need to be rotated halfway through baking.

These can also be baked on a smoker. Preheat the smoker and add some wood or pellets for a smoky flavour. Pecan, peach, or apple wood are good choices.

Can Peach Tarts Be Baked In The Oven?

Yes, this recipe can also be made in the oven. The steps remain the same as using the BBQ, but the baking time may vary.

They will lack the BBQ flavour you get when you bake them in the oven, but they are still delicious.

How To Serve BBQ Bourbon Peach Tarts

These tarts are best served warm. They can be served on their own or with toppings.

  • Vanilla Ice Cream. A small scoop of vanilla ice cream on top of a warm peach tart is our favourite way to serve these. The ice cream melts into the peaches making the filling creamy and delicious.
  • Maple Syrup. Top tarts with a drizzle of maple syrup to add an extra layer of flavour.
  • Whipped cream. A small dollop of whipped cream on top is also a good choice for a topping. Sprinkle a little cinnamon and nutmeg over the whipped cream for colour.
  • Nuts. Slivered almonds, crushed pistachios, or chopped walnuts can be served on top to add crunch.
  • Caramel Sauce. A drizzle of caramel over the top complements the peaches.
  • Mint. A mint leaf can be added for a splash of colour when serving.

Storing Bourbon Peach Tarts

Any leftover tarts should be stored in an air-tight container in the fridge. They will last up to 3 days.

They can be served cold or they can be reheated on the BBQ. An easy way to reheat these tarts after dinner is to place them on a baking tray on the BBQ after cooking. Shut off the BBQ and let them reheat as the BBQ cools down.
