Why Make Homemade Flour Tortillas?

The answer to this is simple. Homemade tastes a lot better!

And this recipe is so easy to make that it can be made in less time than running to the store to buy tortillas if you run out or don’t have any on hand.

What Are The Ingredients In Flour Tortillas?

Unlike store-bought tortillas, homemade flour tortillas have only five ingredients. And these ingredients are simple enough that just about every kitchen already has these ingredients on hand.

  • All-purpose flour.
  • Baking powder.
  • Avocado Oil, vegetable oil or olive oil.
  • Salt.
  • Water.

Cooking The Tortillas

These homemade tortillas can be easily made in a hot frying pan on the stove top. Cast iron pans work best but they can also be made in a non-stick pan.

If you have a Blackstone griddle or similar, we highly recommend using it to make this recipe. We have a 22-inch griddle and can make this recipe in minutes on the Blackstone because it allows 8 tortillas to be made at once.

How To Use Homemade Tortillas?

Homemade tortillas are slightly thicker than store-bought tortillas. You can roll them out as thin as you can but they do still get slightly thicker when cooked.

Use these tortillas just as you would any other tortilla. They can be used for tacos, fajitas, or burritos. However you would use a store-bought tortilla, these can be used in the same way.

These can be used as wraps as well. Fill with your favourite fillings, roll, and enjoy.

How To Store Leftover Tortillas

This recipe makes eight flour tortillas. Any leftovers can be stored in an airtight container and used the next day.

These tortillas don’t have any preservatives in them so they don’t last as long as store-bought. That is one of the downfalls. But since the recipe only makes eight tortillas, we usually don’t have any leftovers.

Tortillas can also be frozen for up to 2 months. To freeze, place a piece of parchment between each tortilla before placing it in a freezer bag. Thaw at room temperature before warming.

These tortillas make an excellent base for Fish Tacos.
