Why Make Your Own Spice Blends?

Making your own spice blends can be cheaper than buying premade blends. There are other benefits as well.

When you make your own seasonings, you can control some of the ingredients that are in the blends. Salt is one ingredient that can be altered in homemade seasonings. We have purchased some premade seasonings that have contained so much salt that we ended up throwing out because it was too high in sodium.

Homemade seasonings are also great for any one who has an allergy to certain foods. This recipe contains mustard seeds which can be an allergen. They can be omitted if this is the case.

Ingredients For Montreal Steak Spice

This recipe is made from spices that are all easy to find. Usually, we buy these spices in bulk at Bulk Barn. This allows us to buy specific amounts because some ingredients are not ones we use a lot.

  • Whole peppercorns.
  • Coarse Kosher Salt.
  • Garlic powder.
  • Onion powder.
  • Coriander seeds.
  • Mustard seeds.
  • Dried dill.
  • Dried rosemary.

How To Make This Spice Blend

The peppercorns and seeds have to be broken down. A spice grinder makes this blend easier to make but it can also be made using a mortar and pestle.

All the other ingredients are added to the peppercorns and seeds after pulsing to break them down.

When making large batches of this spice, we pulse the ingredients in smaller batches before shaking well in a large mason jar.

How To Use Montreal Steak Spice

Even though it says steak spice, this seasoning can be used on so much more.

  • Beef. Everything from Brisket, Prime Rib and steaks can be seasoned with this spice blend.
  • Pork chops. This seasoning is great on pork chops.
  • Chicken. Use on chicken breasts or thighs before grilling.
  • Vegetables. We use this seasoning on vegetables on the BBQ. Place chopped carrots, potatoes, or any root vegetable in a foil pan, add pats of butter and seasoning with homemade Montreal steak spice before cooking on the BBQ.
