Homemade Chipotle Sauce

This creamy Homemade Chipotle Sauce makes a great dipping sauce for sweet potato fries or chicken. It is also delicious as a topping for burgers or tacos. This sauce can also be used as a salad dressing.

Chipotle Sauce with Grilled Sweet Potatoes

Looking through the grocery store, I have not been able to find a chipotle sauce on the shelves. When I did find one in a local deli, I found it to be sweet because it contained added sugar. In our opinion, chipotle sauce should be hot, not sweet.

There are many ways to make a chipotle sauce, such as mayonnaise or sour cream. This recipe calls for mayo and Greek yogurt. The combination of these two ingredients creates a certain consistency. Greek yogurt is thicker than mayo and sour cream, giving this sauce a little thicker texture and making it a better dipping sauce. The acidity of the yogurt also adds to the flavour of the sauce, helping to balance the heat of the peppers and the sugar in the mayo.

Chipotle Sauce Ingredients

This recipe has seven ingredients in total.

  • Mayonnaise. Full-fat mayonnaise works best for a creamy texture, but low-fat can also be used.
  • Greek yogurt. Thicker than sour cream, Greek yogurt helps make this sauce thick.
  • Chipotle peppers in adobo sauce. These come in a can that can be found in the international aisle of the grocery store. Both the peppers and the sauce is used in this recipe.
  • Garlic. Fresh garlic cloves add a hint of garlic that complements the peppers.
  • Cumin.
  • Paprika.
  • Kosher Salt.

Mild or Hot?

The great thing about Homemade Chipotle Sauce is that you can adjust the number of chipotle peppers to your liking. We sometimes have two jars in the fridge, a jar of mild and a jar of medium or hot.

The chipotle peppers I use are readily available in grocery stores in the international section. You can also find them at Amazon. I use three peppers and a little sauce for the mild version of this sauce. For the hot version, I use the entire can of peppers and sauce.

How To Make Creamy Homemade Chipotle Sauce

Making this sauce is easy. A blender or food processor is needed to make the sauce.

All the ingredients are added to the blender and processed until it’s smooth and creamy.

My Ninja blender is what I use to make this sauce because it is powerful enough to break down the peppers without overblending the sauce. The more you process the ingredients, the thinner the sauce becomes.

If you don’t have a blender, a food processor will work. If using a food processor, I like to add the peppers to the bowl and process them for a few seconds before adding the other ingredients to avoid over-processing the sauce.

Uses For Homemade Chipotle Sauce

This creamy sauce can be used in many ways. As a topping, a dipping sauce, or a dressing.

  • Vegetable Dip. This sauce makes a great dip for a vegetable platter. Carrots, sweet peppers, and cherry tomatoes are great for dipping in this sauce.
  • Salad Dressing. Top a salad with this sauce instead of salad dressing.
  • Tacos. Instead of taco sauce, add this chipotle sauce to tacos.
  • Sweet Potato Fries. Chipotle sauce is one of the best dips for sweet potato fries.
  • Burgers. Beef or turkey burgers can be topped with this sauce of added flavour.
  • Chicken Tenders. Dip chicken tenders in this sauce for a little kick.

How to Store Chipotle Sauce

Chipotle Sauce keeps well in a mason jar in the fridge. The sauce will only be kept until the expiry date on the Greek yogurt, which I like to write on the lid of the jar or on a sticker stuck to the side of the jar.

My favourite recipe to use this Chipotle Sauce is with Grilled Sweet Potatoes or Sweet Potato Fries. This sauce is also great for dipping Air Fryer Fingerling Potatoes.
