Homemade Chipotle Sauce

Homemade Chipotle Sauce makes a great dipping sauce for sweet potato fries or chicken. It is also delicious as a topping for burgers or tacos. This sauce can also be used as a salad dressing. My kids even put this sauce on their nachos.

Can’t Find A Good Chipotle Sauce in Store

Looking through the grocery store, I have not been able to find a chipotle sauce on the shelves. When I did find one in a local deli, I found it to be sweet and found out it contained added sugar. The chipotle sauce should be hot, not sweet, unless, of course, that is how you like it.

There are many ways to make a chipotle sauce, using mayonnaise or sour cream. This recipe calls for mayo and Greek yogurt. I like the combination of these two ingredients to get a certain consistency. Greek yogurt is thicker than mayo and sour cream, giving this sauce a little thicker texture and making it a better dipping sauce. The acidity of the yogurt also adds to the flavour of the sauce, helping to balance the heat of the peppers and the sugar in the mayo.

Mild or Hot?

The great thing about Homemade Chipotle Sauce is that you can adjust the number of chipotle peppers to your liking. We sometimes have two jars in the fridge. One jar of mild and one jar of medium to hot. Two of our sons prefer the hot, while the other kids prefer the milder sauce.

The chipotle peppers I use are readily available in grocery stores in the international section. You can also find them at Amazon. I use three peppers and a little sauce for the mild version of this sauce. For the hot version, I use the entire can of peppers and sauce.

All the ingredients are added to a blender or food processor, making this recipe easy to make. My Ninja blender is what I use to make this sauce because it is powerful enough to break down the peppers without over blending the sauce. The more you process the ingredients, the thinner the sauce becomes. If you don’t have a blender, you can use a food processor. If using a food processor, I like to add the peppers to the bowl and process them for a few seconds before adding the other ingredients to avoid over-processing the sauce.

How to store Chipotle Sauce

Chipotle Sauce keeps well in a mason jar in the fridge. The sauce will only keep until the expiry date on the Greek yogurt, which I like to write on the lid of the jar or on a sticker stuck to the side of the jar.

My favourite recipe to use this Chipotle Sauce is with Grilled Sweet Potatoes or Sweet Potato Fries. This sauce is also great for dipping Air Fryer Fingerling Potatoes.
