What is Grenadine?

Grenadine is a syrup made from pomegranate juice. It is used in many cocktails like this one to get the red-coloured base. The syrup is heavy, making it sink to the bottom to help give the gradient effect in this cocktail. For cocktails, we like to use Rose’s Grenadine Syrup.

Garnishes For Malibu Sunrise Cocktails

There are a few garnishes you can use for this drink, depending on your preferences. Typically, we serve these with an orange slice on the rim because it resembles the sun rising over the horizon.

Maraschino cherries can be dropped in the bottom of the glass before serving or placed on top using a skewer.

Sometimes we like to dress up the cocktail when serving to guests. Adding a cocktail umbrella or decorated stir stick makes the drink more festive.

How To Make a Malibu Sunrise Cocktail

This cocktail is very simple to make. It’s all about adding the ingredients in the right order. everything will layer in a gradient effect.

The Malibu Rum and orange juice are added first and stirred. Then the ice is added. The pineapple juice is poured slowly over the ice to create a lighter colour on top of the cocktail. The grenadine is last to be added slowly by pouring it over the back of a spoon and it will sink to the bottom of the glass. This is how the layers of colours are created.

Then garnish the glass and serve.

What To Serve This Cocktail In

We like to use hurricane glasses for serving these cocktails because we like the shape and how they looks.

Another way to serve this is in highball glasses or soda can glasses.

Any tall clear glass is best. You don’t want to use coloured glass because you want to show the beauty of the drink and the gradient colour effect. That is what makes the drink special.

Mocktail Version of Malibu Sunrise

It is very easy to enjoy this cocktail without alcohol. We do make this drink into mocktails for those who don’t want to consume alcohol.

Simply replace the Malibu Rum with coconut water. This will give the coconut flavour with the alcohol.
