Salty and tangy, Smoked Bacon Wrapped Pickles are the perfect appetizer for your next BBQ. This simple appetizer is easy to make with only three ingredients.

Many people enjoy deep-fried pickles, whether they are spears or chips. Served with a side of ranch dressing, deep-fried pickles have become a staple at many restaurants and pubs. But they can become boring after a while. So why not try Bacon Wrapped Pickles instead.

Why Make Smoked Bacon Wrapped Pickles?

I thought there had to be some other way to serve pickles as an appetizer or snack. Some way to smoke the pickles with a new flavor or a twist.

So when I saw a picture of bacon-wrapped pickles, I thought I had to make this. But I always have to add my twist to anything I make. After a bit of thought, I decided that smoking the bacon-wrapped pickles could work. Add a side of barbecue sauce instead of ranch and maybe it would make a great appetizer or snack.

The results were amazing! They are like a new kind of Pigs in a Blanket or more of a Pickle in a Blanket.

What Are The Ingredients For Bacon Wrapped Pickles?

There are only three ingredients needed to make these bacon wrapped pickles.

  • Dill Pickles. This can be store bought dills or homemade. We like to use our homemade pickles.
  • Bacon. Use your favourite bacon. We like to use applewood smoked bacon.
  • BBQ seasoning. Although we make our own to use in this recipe, a store bought variety will work as well as a cajun seasoning or similar.

How to Make Smoked Bacon-Wrapped Pickles

The pickles can be whole of halved or quartered to make this recipe. They are wrapped in bacon, then seasoned with BBQ seasoning before being placed on the smoker.

Applewood was our choice for smoking these pickles, but you can use your favourite wood.

How To Serve This Appetizer

We like to serve these with a dip. Either ranch or dill dressing is good with these pickles. They can also be served with BBQ sauce for dipping.

These pickles are also good without any dip at all. They have a lot of flavour on their own.

However you serve them, I am sure you will enjoy them as much as we did. They make a great game day snack and would be perfect for Grey Cup or Super Bowl parties.

And they would also make a great appetizer for your next BBQ or a family and friends get-together.

Tips for making Smoked Bacon Wrapped Pickles

The pickles will need to be dried a little but not too much, before smoking. You don’t want the pickles too wet or too dry so the rub sticks to them but doesn’t get goopy.

To make it easier to coat the pickle in seasoning, I pour some seasoning into a shallow bowl or on a plate. Then the pickles can be rolled in the seasoning easier than trying to sprinkle the pickle with seasoning.

This recipe is also very easy to half, quarter, or double since there are few ingredients.

You can cut the pickles in half lengthwise and skip poking them. In this case, you would only need 6 pickles.

  • Smoker or BBQ


  • 12 large dill pickles
  • 12 bacon slices
  • cup BBQ seasoning
  • ½ cup BBQ sauce, for dipping


  • Heat smoker to 300°F and add wood chips of choice.
  • Remove pickles from jar and allow to sit on a plate or tray to dry a little but not too much
  • Using a toothpick, poke a few holes in the pickles to allow smoke into the pickle
  • Coat each pickle in BBQ rub or spice blend
  • Wrap one slice of bacon around each pickle and secure the ends with toothpicks.
  • Place in smoker and smoke at 300°F for 45 minutes or until the bacon is crispy.
  • Remove from the smoker and allow to cool slightly before serving.


*Alternatively, you can cut the pickles in half lengthwise and skip poking them. In this case, you would only need 6 pickles.

    You had me until pickles! I am not a pickle fan, but I know several of my friends will love this recipe! I will be making it for our Labor day cookout….. I will just sneak all the bacon!
