How To Serve Chili Dogs

Grilled Chili Dogs can be served on their own or as part of a larger buffet or BBQ.

When making these for a weeknight dinner, we serve them with a side of fries or salad. They also go well with a side of tortilla chips and salsa.

Turn These Into A Buffet

If we are serving these for a crowd we turn it in to a buffet with all kinds of toppings available for everyone to create their own chili dog.

To create a buffet, we place all the wieners in the toasted buns and keep them warm inside the BBQ on low indirect heat. Usually we stack them in a large aluminum pan.

The chili get placed in a large pot over low heat in the same BBQ as the hot dogs. A small ladle works well for scooping the chili onto the hot dogs.

All the toppings are placed on a table near the BBQ. This is where the side dishes are as well.

For a larger crowd we also make burgers and turn them into Chili Burgers.

How To Make Grilled Chili Dogs

There are a few ways to make these hot dogs.

  • Gas Grill. One of the easiest ways to grill hot dogs is on a gas grill. It is also one of the fastest ways.
  • Charcoal Grill. Cooking hot dogs over charcoal gives the hot dogs more of a smoky flavour.
  • Flat Top Griddle. Another quick and easy way to cook hot dogs is on a flat top.

Heating Chili On A BBQ

Chili can be easily heated on a BBQ in a heavy bottomed pot. When making Chili Dogs, we heat the chili in a cast iron pot or Dutch oven.

The pot can be heated on a side burner or right on the grill. A pot can also be placed directly on the flat top to heat through.
